Ian Marsanyi is a musician and composer based in New York City. Ian was raised on Whidbey Island, Washington, by the unusual trifecta of the Northwest jazz education scene, the study of classical piano repertoire, and the avant and esoteric interests of his father, former Bay-Area musician Robert Marsanyi. With a background firmly rooted in the jazz tradition but with an ear to the diversity of other 20th-century musics, he now operates primarily in contemporary and new-music contexts, from improvised and computer music to contemporary chamber and theater works. His works channel inspiration from a eclectic collection of styles and schools of thought, to create pieces that are "at times elegiac and at others playful."
Ian has had the privilege and pleasure to study under such musicians and composers such as George Lewis, Tony Moreno, Brad Garton, Ole Mathisen, Douglas Repetto, Carl Bettendorf, Steve Korn, and Don Sickler. His works have been premiered by counter)induction, for the Island Shakespeare Festival, and the Columbia Jazz Composers Collective, and his performance career has taken him from the venues throughout the greater Seattle region to the Rose Theater at Lincoln Center.
A graduate of Columbia University with degrees in Philosophy and Jazz Performance, Ian is currently exercising his liberal arts education as an Android Partner Engineer at Google.
